“Lolita” (1997)
This movie "Lolita" was based on the same-titled novel by Vladi-mir Nabo-kov.
I heard about the novel and the movie for the first time from one of the weblogs I regularly subscribe. I did also learn that the word "Lolita" describing certain category of girls in Japan came from this novel. We even have a word "Lolita Complex"(I think it’s Japanese English) to describe guys who are attracted to/obsessed with those girls or very young girls.
This movie is about a British professor (assuming late 40’s or early 50’s) falling in love with 14-year-old girl when he came to U.S.
The story goes from the professor’s perspectives. so I assume most of the scenes were made to express his point of view (including the girl’s bahaviors/actions to seem to "seduce" him). Some females might feel unhappy/uncomfortable about the fact that this story is described as if "she" was the one who seduced him, not him being wrong…
My own analysis on this story is that the professor was stuck to the moment when his 1st dearest girlfriend died. (I never read the original story in the book, so I’m just thinking from what I saw in the movie.) He was in love with this girl when he was also young and had wonderful time with her, but suddenly she died and disappeared from the world. Probably his attraction/obsession to "Lolita" came from this sad event.
But over all, my honest opinion is… all of the main characters in the movie are "crazy" or "not usual." The professor has a problem controlling his emotion. He goes mad/loses his mind. .He falls in love with 14-year-old girl…. The girl has a problem behaving herself. Her manner is not very good as a girl (like she opens her legs widely with skirts on anytime and anywhere). She is also short temper. She does whatever makes her entertained (like she throws stuff and block the professor’s eye vision when he’s driving)…. and the guy who she got married in the end is very weird…..
It’s a weird movie after all.
